How To Shift Gears

Learning how to shift gears on a motorcycle can be one of the more tricky things to pick up for new riders. The diagram below shows the basic gear shift set-up for most motorcycles:

To shift a motorcycle you need to follow the following 4 basic steps:

1. Close the throttle.
2. Pull in the clutch.
3. Shift into the gear you need for the situation you are in.
4. Then release the clutch smoothly while adding throttle again.
